Bond reminisces on his run-in with SMERSH and questions to himself, “Was this appointment with M to start him on his trail of revenge? Live and Let Die, a film based loosely on the novel, was released in 1973; it starred Roger Moore as Bond, and played on the cycle of blaxploitation films produced at the time. Big is head of the Black Widow Voodoo cult and uses the black magic associated with Caribbean voodoo and folklore to spread fear and obedience among his followers. Petersburg while Bond is to travel on a train known as “The Silver Phantom” under the alias John Bryce.

He published his first novel Casino Royale in 1953 and thus started the astoundingly successful James Bond novels and films.A thousand coins from Bloody Morgan’s treasure have popped up in America, being sold and traded by “negroes”. Hardcover in black linson covered boards, gilt lettering to the spine and to the coin emblem on the front cover (the gilt lettering shows some fading). First off - any critics who can't see past the dated racial terminology in this book are missing an (admittedly cumbersome) attempt at a progressive breakthrough.

He’s certainly not above sexualising women, and sometimes making them damsels to be rescued by Bond. I was thinking during the whole book that it was very open minded of Fleming to have Bond have a romantic relationship with a black woman in only his second book, and in the 1950s. Live and Let Die was published in the US in January 1955 by Macmillan; there was only one major change in the book, which was that the title of the fifth chapter was changed from "Nigger Heaven" to "Seventh Avenue". In 1954 James Bond was a character in a book by Ian Fleming, there had been no movies, Bond was just a fictional character whose first outing in Casino Royale had warranted a follow up, Live and Let Die.In a time when a book like Little House on the Prairie can be withdrawn from the American syllabus because of it’s racist attitudes and author’s prejudices, it should be remembered that these are reflections of the times and should be used to teach rather than to be redacted. LIVE AND LET DIE was the second Bond book but the first to be banned (by the Republic of Ireland), which naturally led to higher sales.

Dust jacket with some minor chipping to the corners and spine ends, small closed tear on the top edges, light tanning. Bond remembers his last meeting with M, which directly references the “great gambling case in which he had been involved at Royale-les-Eaux” when a Russian assassin carved a letter in the back of his hand, marking him as a spy.

Savoye, comparing the structure of Live and Let Die with Casino Royale, believes that the two books have open narratives which allow Fleming to continue with further books in the series.
